Welcome

My name is Nick Doran, and I am the former president of the UCSD Casual Golf Club.

I am going to post rules decisions as I encounter them on the golf course. I am pretty sure that I will be able to come up with at least one rule nugget for each round that I play.

10/17/2026 - Cottonwood (Ivanhoe course)

Cottonwood has large swaths of Ground Under Repair (GUR).  It's generally well marked.  There is a giant GUR right of the fairway on hole #11.  What do you do if you're virtually certain that your ball went into the GUR area, but you can't find it?

Ground Under Repair is an abnormal course condition, and this is covered under Rule #16.  Rule #16.1-e specifically covers the situation when the ball is known or virtually certain to be in the GUR, but the ball is not found.  Free relief, nearest point of complete relief, no closer to the hole.
